St. Jean Pied de Port-the Journey Begins

I arrived at the St Jean Pied de Port station and walked with a bunch of pilgrims into town, looking for the Pilgrims information place. I soon had my credential, a scallop shell, and a room. The town is ancient, but very lively. I have met an Italian woman and an Irishman who has ridden his bike from Holland. I was actually able to help some non-French speakers to be understood. It is a struggle to try to understand a foreign language constantly, but thrilling when you succeed. Tomorrow will be a tough day. Pray for good weather. Bon soir.

  2. What an adventure - people in Kentucky want to know about the plane and train trip. They all think you are living 'out of the box'! Guess most don't know the real you.

  7. WOW! We are thrilled for you. Your Dad turned us on to the Blog. What you are doing makes me think of a recent favorite quote: "Your life is yours alone, rise up and live it." (Terry Goodkind)

  9. Bev...I'm thrilled you arrived safely, & have begun your sojourn! If I understood your post, what identifies you as a pilgrim is the scallop shell? I wonder what the equivalent of the scallop is in each of our daily walks with God? Remember the description of a pilgrimage as "the prayer of the feet"...Keep praying! I'm so proud of you, & wish I was going along with you. Have fun, but be careful...Jesus said, "Be as shrewd as snakes and as innocent as doves." (Matthew 10:16b)

p.s. You've inspired me to start blogging, too (http://everythingandthekitchensinktoo.blogspot.com)

  10. Jim, the scallop shell is indeed a symbol of the Compostela pilgrim. I think they brought them back fron Finnesterre on the Atlantic as proof that they were there. Believe me, I have been praying, and I feel the prayers of others. It's the only way I could have made it up that mountain!
